Interview with Ashley Faulkes from MadLemmings.com
When I first came across the blog on MadLemmings.com I was almost annoyed. I knew I was going to spend a good chunk of that afternoon lost in the immense articles there.
So much for getting through my to-do list…
Fortunately, it was totally worth it. Particularly when it comes to reviewing tools and apps to boost your WordPress site or grow your online business: Ashley Faulkes has it down.
Plus his Australian sarcasm makes for a refreshing read 😉
Naturally, I had to dig into the man behind the words – and that brings us to interview #2 in my series of all-stars in the creative business world.
1) What was your first big break in your career/when did you feel ‘yes! this is working!’ first?
When I landed my first big client, who has since gone on to become an great on-going partner and friend, that is when I realised that Mad Lemmings was more than a blog, it was a business.
2) Do you have any morning routine you can share? (ie. wake up time etc)
Honestly, I am not a morning person, so I like to ease my way into the day. As I work from home, I drink my morning latte and breakfast at my desk while checking my emails. A lot of things come into my inbox overnight, because I work with the US a lot (and am in Europe), so I find that is s good start to the day that way. I then move on to my most important tasks for the day, and try to stay focused!
Cat: Ashley’s reviews are SO useful – here he covers over 10 landing page options and works out the best one for you.
3) Where do you look for inspiration?
My biggest inspiration comes from fellow entrepreneurs who are in a place I want to be in a few years. I look for people sharing real life examples, case studies, stories and so on. People who have actually achieved what I am after, and are willing to share how they did it. I often find these people via podcasts (great for feeling really connected) or other blogs I stumble upon via Twitter or elsewhere.
4) Who are your mentors?
In that sense, I am a bit of a loner. I don’t look for or ask for much help. I have always forged my own way, learning on my own, starting with my previous job – software developer, something I never studied. However, I do use a lot of ideas and methods from the inspiring people I eluded to in the last answer. Some of these people also have great courses which have helped hone my skills and ideas.
One area where I do have help though is from my mastermind group. I formed it earlier in 2015, and the 3 of us are now close friends, in similar situations online, who are really able to support one another on a weekly basis. This is something everyone should look for, especially if you are a solopreneur.
5) What book/s have made the biggest impact on you?
Influence, by Cialdini, is the one book that has really helped me this year. it really shows you the fundamental marketing and psychology principles that is being used to sell to us, and that we can also use in turn.
I also read a very inspiring book recently called Living with a Seal: 31 Days Training with the Toughest Man on the Planet, by Jesse Itzler. Although mostly about physical training, it shows how getting outside your comfort zone is really the only way to grow in life and in business.
Cat: I’m terrible at staying on top of back ups – but this article really gave me a good kick up the bum to get on track!
6) What advice would you give to yourself 5 years ago?
Stop doing what you think you “should” be doing, and do what you want instead. Life is too short to get stuck in a dead-end job, or a place where you are not happy. And so many more things are possible than you can imagine. So just get out and do it.
Thanks so much for that insight into the mad world of Mad Lemmings Ashley! I can definitely second your recommendation to find a mastermind group – it can be a real game changer.
I can also recommend checking out the Mad Lemmings blog – the articles are IMMENSE so you can really expect to get some seriously valuable advice and how-to’s there. If you’re looking to learn more about running your business online and reaching more people, head on over to MadLemmings.com!
